Cross section: Construction lines

Construction lines are the base for any cross section. All other objects are  dependent on them. Select the appropriate symbol in the top row of the cross section window to create a new construction line and choose the basic line(s) for the new one.

The status line at the bottom of the input window informs the user about the required action.

If the new construction line is dependent on a value (angle, distance) the  program uses the current expression (value or variable) in the variable field in the cross section window. Be aware of the used dimensions!

The functions for defining construction lines are described in the sequence of the symbol row:

SettingDescription
Parallel construction line

This type of line is defined by a basic line and a distance to it. A new parallel line needs a distance as expression in the variable field. A basic line has to be selected first, then by clicking again on one of the two sides of this basic line the new line will be created.

Parallel construction line - relative to an cross section axis

This type of line is defined by one basic line, one axis and a distance. The additional selection causes that the distance is taken in the direction of that axis. By clicking the basic line, the axis and any point on one side of the basic line the new line will be created.

Parallel construction line - Point

This type of line is defined by a basic line, an intersection of two construction lines and a distance. The distance will be taken at this intersection point, perpendicular to the basic line. The basic line, the intersection point and any clicked point on one side of the intersection point defines the new construction line.

Construction line via two intersection points

This type of line is defined by two intersection points of other construction lines. No numerical value is required.

Construction line - absolute angle to the x-axis

This type of line is defined by an intersection point of construction lines and an angle. The angle is taken anti-clockwise from the positive x-axis. By clicking an intersection point a new line is created.

Construction line - relative angle to a basic line

This type of line is defined by an intersection point of construction lines, a basic line and an angle. The angle of the new line is the sum of the angle of the basic line and the user defined angle in the variable edit box. Select an intersection point and a basic line to create the new line.

Polygonal line

A polygonal line consists of one or several constr. lines that are defined by intersection points and a distance. The distance can vary within the polygon. The polygon parts (constr. lines) are defined by clicking the intersection points. The right mouse button cancels the definition.

Polygonal lines are usually supporting the definition of steel elements.

Parallel polygon

A new polygon can be created by a parallel movement of an existing polygon. The distance between each other is defined in the variable field. Clicking on one of the two sides of the basic polygon will create a new polygon being parallel to the basic one.

Modify construction lines

After any constr. line (or any part of a polygon) has been selected and the Modify tool in the left vertical symbol column has been pressed, an input window will be opened and parameters of the line can be modified.

Note: The changes can not be executed if a modification leads into a calculation error of dependent objects.

Certain modifications (trimming polygons, change of side, elongation) can be done directly using the corresponding symbols of the cross section window.

Trim polygons

The begin and end part can be limited in its length (shorter or longer) to a construction line. To cut the line, select the line which the polygon wants to be trimmed to. Then choose the part of the polygon, that wants to be deleted.

Delete unused construction lines "Purge"

All construction lines, that are not used by other objects or only used by other construction lines, will be deleted.

Elongation or shortening construction lines

Constr. lines may have a "+" or "-" extension, both to infinity. The symbols at the left upper corner with the corresponding mathematical signs may be used to modify the extension. Construction that are extended to infinity may also be shortened. But only construction lines by intersections and polygons only can be shortened in both directions.

Change of sides of construction lines.

All construction lines or polygons that are defined by a parallel movement can be swapped. That means, the direction of the distance will be tuned around.

List of construction lines

With the shortcut <CTRL+C> a list of all construction lines is appears. It is possible to select a single or more construction lines within this list for  further operations.
